Hot headed and sweating with fury. That’s the general state of mind I am in after driving, anywhere, on any road, for just 10 minutes. What is happening on the road that could possibly justify my outrage? What kinds of things could go on on the road to enrage even the most even-keeled individual? Ok, let’s go there.
The fact is that the most unimaginable things happen on the road every day. Let’s take a quick look at the highway. What is it? It’s a BIG road with at least three (3) lanes, constructed to move huge volumes of cars at express speeds, to various points in a locale. The idea of the highway was speed and convenience, as it offers a much faster way to get across greater distances without having to take side-roads all the way there.
That was the intent of the highway, but the actuality is that there are rules that govern a highway that were also part of the design. These rules are not rules as in “domineering government trying to tell you what to do” but rather rules like gravity holds planets in orbit only if they are at a certain distance from the host planet relative to their wieght. Did you get that? Too complicated for the smaller intellects? Ok, here’s another natural rule. Eating soup requires a spoon. Try eating soup with a fork and see how far you get, but do it in private or you’ll be put in a mental institution for even trying. Why? Because it should be pretty obvious even to a retarded person, that forks are not made for liquids.
Why am I taking such an arrogant posture and such a demeaning tone? Let’s think of this all from a rarely considered perspective. The highway is a soup so to eat from it you need a spoon. That’s natural. When the highway was designed, it was primarily conceived with 3 lanes. The lanes are not arbitrary, they have priority and function, very specifically. The rules are so simple, you might start feeling your blood boil as you read the obvious.
The left lane is for faster traffic and/or (depending on locale) passing only. The left lane, in places where traveling in it is acceptable full time, is also for traffic that is going the longest distance, thus it’s expected that the speeds in the left lane will be somewhat higher than the posted speed limit as those drivers are hoping to shorten the time to their distance. That was the virtue behind the design of the highway: getting there faster.
The middle or center lane is called the cruising lane. This is the lane where the majority of traffic is supposed to settle into a cruising speed, usually the speed limit or slightly faster. 4 lane highways have two middle lanes to accommodate more of what should be steadily moving traffic.
Last is the right lane. This is the referred to quite often as the “granny lane”. It is the slower traffic lane. Heavy trucks, trailers, motor homes, old people, stuff like that, that needs to go A LITTLE slower than the speed limit. It is also the exit and entrance lane, where it is easiest to get on and off the highway.
The rules are obviously pretty simple. They are more like attributes of the design than rules, and they are not posted. Should they be? Well if the world wants to act like a bunch of ignoramusi, then they should be treated as they wish to. Sounds harsh I know but let’s talk now about the horrifying human displays of utter ignorance on the road.
The most typical things I encounter on the road are basically any combination of the following:
1. People traveling 30 mph, that’s 20 – 35 mph BELOW the minimum posted speed limit, in the left or middle lanes, and many times, all of the world is obviously trying to pass them and get around them, yet they insist on driving in that lane regardless of any inconvenience to the rest of humanity. The idiots who do this don’t have the cranial capacity to figure out that what they do affects everyone around them and behind them. In heavy volume situations, the effect of just one of these morons can cause a back up or slow down that stretches tens of miles behind them, causing ‘false’ traffic. If you keep and eye out for this sort of thing, you will find that the major culprits are old people, women, asians, and big pissed off neanderthal types just itching for a fight. Don’t believe me? Pay attention on the road and you’ll see exactly what I am talking about. Sometimes the truth is harsh, but rather then take it as a wake up call, most will just be offended when they see their reflections in this blog.
2. Braking for ghosts. Yep, they exist apparently on the highways and roads of the planet. I’ve even seen video of stupidity such as this on the highways in other countries. This is a humanity problem, affecting all nationalities and ethnicities, but some of these are notoriously idiotic. People traveling in a lane, usually speed limit or less, with no one, for a long distance or at all, in front of them, and as soon as you get about three to five car lengths from them, THEY BRAKE! Upon regular observation, I’ve found that they all, are beaming into their rear-view mirror, the whole time, watching you approach, not watching for the chipmunk they just ran over, and when they see you get closer, it’s as though they think that by braking, they will miraculously slow down your car!! Holy crap, I am starting to sweat just writing this.
3. Random lane changers. These cats are the ones you see, many times in no-traffic situations, who are casually doing the speed limit, or less, seemingly stable and well-paced, in the middle lane, and you are doing 10-20 mph over the limit cruising fast and comfortable, in the left lane. Just about the moment you are about to pass, they decide for no reason, to change into your lane! They are not going at your speed and they had no obstruction in their lane, they just see you coming and subconsciously, their primitive lizard brain, tells them to jump in your way.
4. Texters. All I can say is if this needs any explanation, you are one of them. They should lose their license for life and never be allowed near a car ever again. Or, they should be made to eat their phone. Either way they will feel an almost equally discomforting effect as what they freely provide the world around them when they drive.
5. Babble-on-ers. Like texters, these cats talk forever. These are lonely, attention starved, egomaniacs, that love to hear themselves talk, even to the point where driving is secondary to talking, reason is secondary to stupidity. Same as texters, these people should lose their privileges.
6. Short Stops. Slamming your brakes on because you are being summoned by the car behind you to move out of the way, is not a smart thing to do. It is also a move of aggression and can incite a psycho to take actions against you that you will not like. Some people will go to extremes to express their dislike of you for being so arrogant. It’s better to heed the petition to change lanes then to argue. Most than likely if you are one of those that gets high-beamed alot, you are also most likely a slow-poke, going to slow for the lane.
7. Un-signaler. These people have a disease. This is a growing plague that affects the reasoning center of the brain, usually caused by a growing sense of stupidity brought on by an undue sense of egomania. The people who are guilty of this one are probably the most ignorant of all. I have received “the bird” gesture when attempting to enlighten these scumbags to the error of their ways and most of the time the wife and baby are in the vehicle with them! What examples of adulthood they are don’t you think? More often then one might think, it’s the chic that flips the bird, when she’s alone in the car or with child. That’s crazy! Do that to the wrong person and you will make the news under the headline of missing person. Are people really that stupid and arrogant? Yes they sadly are.
Not signaling has some parallels that after hearing them, should be convincing enough to inspire even the most diseased minds to heed this warning. It can be compared to leaving work without telling anyone or your boss, complaining to the waitress that your order is taking to long even though you never ordered, jogging side by side with your friend and then cutting a sudden, unannounced turn across their path, tripping them and causing them to fall and bust all their front teeth out. It can be compared to pitching a baseball at someone when they don’t expect it, swinging an ax around in a crowd without warning everyone, shooting a shotgun in a McDonalds unannounced. Yes all these sound crazy and I am sure you’d all say you’d never do any of these. Only crazy people do such things. Then you agree that un-signalers are crazy people, willing to disregard the existence of other vehicles and people at the risk of death or injury. They are willing to put aside reason for stupidity.
So those are the main things that you’ll find, commonly, on any road, any where in the world, to greater or lesser degrees based on your locale. In the US, these problems are outrageous. We are not a backward, third world nation. We are the pinnacle of the motor-sports phenomenon, the producer of some of the greatest drivers in history, makers of muscle cars and performance exotics, custom vehicles and hot rods. Then why the heck do we have such problems on the road?
The answer lies in the education of drivers. The system for this education is so poor and unrealistic, that basically the licensing system in America is like giving everyone an eye chart test for a license to be a brain surgeon. Driving is a deadly affair. Repairs are costly, injuries are life altering, and these drive insurance rates through the roof. Blame yourselves for rising rates and frivolous lawsuits. You make them happen by not taking personal responsibility to be better at everything you do. Learning doesn’t end when you leave school and it’s an honorable person who continues to pursue knowledge, training and embetterment.
The 7 common faults of most drivers that I pointed out, along with a great lacking in personal integrity in so much of our “self-absorbed” society, creates most of the traffic we ever experience. No matter how many lanes we make on our highways, they will never make enough to eliminate traffic. That’s because volume is not the problem. Inept drivers are the problem.
If you are fearful, untrained, inexperienced (no matter how many years one drives point A to point B, that is not experience. There are methods to experience real driving dynamics and educate by feel), air brained, scatter brained, uncoordinated , blind, paraplegic, retarded, lobotomized, stroked out, stricken with Alzhiemer’s, etc., you should not be anywhere near a car. You should figure out realistically what your limitations are and admit them, then find ways to live around those limitations, and there is less shame in that then to be a suck-ass driver and then so arrogant and insane as to defend your deadly stupidity by arguing pointlessly or flipping people the bird or taking aggressor actions like jamming on the brakes.
A proper licensing and education system would cure the problem. More than 50% of all drivers would not pass, proving to be just plain too incompetent to drive a car, some even a bicycle, and many more would be restricted to secondary and tertiary roads. Those who would be fully licensed would have the confidence in their fellow driver, knowing that to acquire their licenses, they had to undergo difficult hands on driving tests and challenges to physically prove their merit. Germany does things much like that. My idea for a system considers the ever growing population and the fuel shortage issue that is inevitable as well as a structure much like the German system.
Trained drivers can go 75 mph bumper to bumper, 120 mph when there is light or no traffic without issue. They would accelerate timely and confidently at lights and on highway entrance ramps. They would signal whenever needed, starting from a distance before the move, that would allow others time to react, simply put, it’s apparent that people are such sheep and self-made ignoramusi, that what aught to be the natural affections of human consideration, actually need to be infused through training. I thought that was what happened as we grew up from children but I guess driving exposes the lack of integrity in human rearing.
Mothers tell children getting their licenses, not to talk on the cell and drive, while they themselves get in their way-too-big SUV, to drive their 100 lb asses to the nail salon, while jabbering on the phone the whole time. It’s time to end this. We have bred fear into drivers by telling them of the horrors of driving but offering no education. This is the reason for the exasperating slowness in overall drivers. There is no reason why an EXPRESSWAY or a FREEWAY with a speed limit of 65 mph, should ever experience traffic as slow as 10 mph, and stopping is only for emergencies.
But as much as we hate traffic, we make it happen, we perpetuate it, and if anyone tells us, like I am doing, we will repel it and scorn the lecturer. Then one day when you drive off the road because some texter ran you into a tree and you watch your kid go flying through the front window and smash his skull like a cantaloupe on that tree, you can blame yourself while placing his funeral flowers at the foot of that tree every year, for not educating yourself in defensive and offensive driving, and not doing something like passing the word to your own friends to be wise about texting and driving. You can blame your own, dignified, adult self, your egomania-saturated greatness, your self-appointed most-importantness, for the wonderful mess you inevitably will make. You can thank yourself for the indignities on the road because you don’t care. That shows, in the inconsiderate actions of the majority.
The saddest image for me is getting flipped off by a guy with M.D. plates, for high-beaming him out of the left lane for going 40 mph, holding back a mile of 3 lane highway. One guy, a doctor, who is supposed to care about people, is the cause of traffic, and when told, he gives you the finger. How good of a doctor is he, if on the road, his pisses on his patients? The same goes for teachers, professionals, executives, mothers, young people, little people. Sad but true that these people are most commonly at fault for the worst, dumbest moves on the road, and they are the main cause of traffic. They need more than a driving education. They need a class in dignity.
Some key things to consider about driving that if you look these up, study driving you’ll find them to be true. Speed doesn’t kill. It gets you where your going today. Bad driving kills. Driving 60 mph for 10 min gets you 6 miles. Going 30 mph, the same 6 miles takes 20 min. Moving a car at 60 mph generates more momentum then at 30 mph, meaning the engine works harder for longer to go 30 mph then to go 60 mph. So 10 min at 60 mph uses the same gas or less then 20 min at 30 mph. The difference is more noticeable the longer the distance. Traffic that crawls at 5 mph for 1 1/2 hrs to make a journey that otherwise should take no more than 15 min at 60mph, wastes 1 1/2 times as much gas, and eats up time, and time is money when we’re talking about rush hour and people trying to get to work. Millions per hour are lost in fuel and business every day, everywhere, all because people do not know how to drive, well.
No one needs to be Mario Andretti, but driving is not a casual affair and should be treated with far more respect, starting with the average person up. Look at the cars manufacturers put out. Their commercials rave about performance, but in reality you find those same cars stuck in brutally slow traffic, on erroneously named EXPRESSWAYS.
I’m not saying these people, most of them as I put it, are bad people inherently, no. I am saying that these are people that are otherwise very good people, generous, warm, compelling, sweet, nice, but somehow when they get in a car, their brains take the train. It doesn’t take much effort to make yourself a better driver, a real driver. The first thing one needs to do is be considerate. Consideration for others in a public forum such as a highway will cure 50% of all traffic indignities. If you wouldn’t fart in Church, then why would you do the equivalent on the road.
I won’t be a prick and complain about this and then not provide some sort of leads for those who, even if only in private, recognize themselves in this blog. I don’t mean to be offensive nor do I hate anyone. I drive fast but I have been studying and practicing performance driving all my life and I am 41 now. In a car, I am as comfortable as in my own skin. Speed only becomes scary now around 150 mph for me, and there is not much that happens that I don’t already expect, so I never find myself at the mercy of the overwhelming ignorance. My reflexes are well honed from the past 7 years of performance driving practice and schooling from professional drivers. You can do the same.
I have watched 55 year old moms come out to these driving affairs and after two or three sessions, these moms are no longer grannies behind the wheel. Screeching tires and hard acceleration, mashing brakes and knarly cornering, you’d think these ladies were the young guys playing for fun. I’ve spoken to them, and inquired about their experience on the road after these sessions. The recurring response is overwhelming confidence. What they experience at these sessions, they realize they might rarely ever be in a similar situation on the road, but if they were, the know they are ready. Secondly, speed is no longer a scary thing for them, driving slow doesn’t make sense to them any more. Not that they became speed demons but now they understand that in the left lane, it’s expected that you do at least the 5 mph over the limit. That is even the acceptable overage by the police. Not to mislead, the limit is what’s posted, but the cops know that if a driver has his wits about him, there is no big deal about being a few miles over. As long as they are not wreckless, driving dangerously or wildly, there is no issue.
Everyone can be a better driver and if you want to see the end of traffic, start with yourself. Trust me when I say that if you were to pursue a driving education, attend performances driving clinics and such, your friends would be so curious they’d start joining you and soon the circle of influence spreads. In a few years, we could all be ready for the road and traffic would be a memory only found in history books.
Below are a few key words you can use to search through Google.com and find a variety of driving education methods and courses. These will make you a driver. I will gather some links and post them here too. My best wishes to you all.

Also look up autocross clubs. There is an autocross club in just about every region of the us, within 30 miles of any location, except the desert. A few dollars gets you in to their events, with your own car. some are there to compete, some for fun and the rest to learn how to handle their car. The clubs are run by aged and schooled drivers, and there are always pro-drivers around as instructors to teach and coach, no charge. These are volunteer run clubs, sanctioned by nationally acclaimed sanctioning bodies such as the Sports Car Club of America. join one and tell them Bo from the NY Region SCCA sent you.
